Winners and Losers of SEO

Since the launch of the first search engine on commercial basis way back into early 1990s, the concept of Search Engine Optimization has been there though it has changed a lot from what it used to be in its early days. Search engines keep on updating their site indexing algorithms in order to avoid bulk of bogus stuff present over the internet and look for the relevant and most desired content. Search engine optimization can be regarded as a marketing strategy which works on the back hand to improve the ranking of any website in Search Engine Page Results (SEPRs). Higher page rank means greater visibility which in turn means enhanced website traffic.

It is reported that Google has announced that it is looking forward to eliminate low quality stuff making it necessary for the webmasters to generate quality content in accordance with the needs of visitors. In this context, the “Farmer update” was unveiled by Google in February this year which is a major change in the search engine indexing algorithms. Also, the “Farmer update”, “Panda Update” being its other name, belongs to the series of such algorithmic changes which Google has planned to implement shortly in order to motivate original content and optimize search results by degrading irrelevance.

Search Engine Optimization: Current Winners and Losers

Google says that by bringing a change in the search algorithms, the worldwide searches are affected to over 12%. As Google uncovered the Panda update, the entire SEO community has been trying to understand the aftereffects of this release as there has been a significant change in the popularity level of a number of websites. SEO experts are trying to figure out the new roles of many web pages in terms of their popularity in search results. Some of the sites like Facebook and YouTube which depict originality have undergone a huge boost in search results while some of the sites have got severe setbacks in terms of search ranking particularly due to reuse of content from other pages.

A list of both SEO winners as well as losers is provided here along with percentage boost and drop respectively for reference which has been created using different statistical figures present over the internet particularly Searchmetrics.

Actually the “problem websites” have been punished by the Panda update. Such websites are mostly with ripped off content along with too many links. Many of the websites which rely on Black Hat SEO have lost their place from the top 100 rank like wahisngtonpost.com once again proving that the Black Hat SEO is never the way to go.

It must be quite tricky for a search engine to judge quality algorithmically, since it is such a subjective thing. I'm sure the only way they could do it would be to use an algorithm to flag up likely spam and manually check it before blocking, otherwise many innocent sites would get penalised.

Traditional SEO is on the decline now. Its more about how social you are that makes your site popular.
