Top 10 Must Have Plugins For A Wordpress Blog

There are over 10k plugins available in the wordpress plugin directory at this moment and they are still increasing. Now the thing is that, how to choose the must have plugin after a fresh install of wordpress on your blog and what are the basic wordpress plugins needed for your blog. Here I am listing top 10 must have wordpress plugins according to me which I think they should be installed and running on your blog. I am pretty much sure that if you are a blogger then you must be having all of them installed but still I am listing down so that it might be useful for a new blogger.

1. Akismet

This plugin is the must have plugin for any blog because this is the plugin which scans the comment you receive and detects if they are spam or not. Akismet checks your comments against the Akismet web service to see if they look like spam or not and lets you review the spam it catches under your blog’s “Comments” admin screen.

2. All In One Webmaster

This plugin allows you to integrate all your website analytic services and also allows you to submit your sitemap to Google, Yahoo and Bing at just one click. It is a must have plugin if you want to keep away yourself from manually adding codes to your theme files.

3. Do Follow

This plugin, as its name says makes your whole blog a do-follow blog. The dofollow plugin for WordPress lets you remove the evil nofollow attribute from your comments. BecauseΒ nofollow will not work.

4. Fast and Secure Contact Form

A contact form is a must have thing for any blog and that is exactly what this plugin does. This contact form lets your visitors send you a quick E-mail message. Blocks all common spammer tactics. Spam is no longer a problem. Includes a CAPTCHA and Akismet support. Additionally, the plugin has a multi-form feature, optional extra fields, and an option to redirect visitors to any URL after the message is sent. Super customizable.

5. Favicons

Choose easily aΒ favicon to make your site eye-catching and easily recognizable by visitors that have several windows opened on their navigator. Favicon plugin allows you even to use your gravatar. It has got a wide range of icons and it is a must have for your blog.

6. Google XML Sitemaps

This plugin will generate a special XML sitemap which will help search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo and Ask.com to better index your blog. With such a sitemap, it’s much easier for the crawlers to see the complete structure of your site and retrieve it more efficiently. A highly recommended and a must have wordpress plugin. You can check my sitemap built by this plugin here : sitemap.

7. Platinum SEO Pack

I have been using All in one SEO plugin till now but after finding this great plugin, I am a regular user of this. This plugin is an extension of All in one SEO plugin with more rich features which allows to enhance your site SEO and per post SEO as well.

8. Sharebar

This is a latest floating bookmarking wordpress plugin and it looks very beautiful with the site as you can see it on my blog. For more details, read my article : How to have a Mashable like floating sharebar for your blog.

9. W3 Total Cache

For a better and smooth run of your site, this plugin helps you a lot. It makes a cache of your site which helps you save some bandwidth and increases your site loading time.

  1. I can add one that is Commentluv, It is my favorite. BTW nice list of plugins. I would prefer All In One SEO instead of Platinum SEO

    1. Yes, commentLuv probably is a good plugin but the reason why I didn’t add that plugin is because of the error I get when I try to use it ! it always says : no blog posts to return whenever i try to use it on other blogs πŸ™‚ but yes, I recommend that plugin too πŸ™‚

  4. Hi,
I thinks the 2 plugins Do follow and Favicons are not necessary, you can easily do their jobs manually. We should reduce the number of plugins as many as we can.
There is an excellent plugin that I am using, it is the conditional captcha, check it out.

    1. yes you are right ! Favicon is only to get a stylish icon for your blog which makes your blog unique from others ! and about that do-follow, the reason why it is helpful is that it allows you to choose whether you want to include anything or not ! and it is very light weight and does not load at the front end so make no difference to page loading time πŸ™‚ and I will definately check conditional captcha right away πŸ™‚

  11. Wonderful post. These plugins are all very important for any blog. A kismet is what most blogs have because people want to keep away spam. The contact form is also of great importance. This is how you get to know your readers views and what they would like you to do.
