When it comes to search engine optimization, it is necessary to understand some basics of SEO which include knowledge of how search engines perform their functionality. Majority of the search engines around typical programs known as spider programs before generating indices. These are also termed as robots and/or crawlers hunt through the web and perform important functionality. Documents are collected, each one is given a unique reference, and their texts are scanned before being handed over to the indexing program. The crawler or spider program used by Google is known as Googlebot.
Googlebot has been assigned the task of searching the web for any new content, i.e. it serves the purpose of looking for new pages and websites all the time. Google, the top search engine around, has been striving to provide users with ease and flexibility. In this regard, Google has successfully launched a brand new way by which users can perform URL submission to Googlebots directly. Whenever there is a need to crawl any particular web page, direct request can be made to Googlebot for this purpose. One thing is worth mentioning here that the new feature of submission of URLs to Googlebot is limited and one has to keep this in front that only to use this feature when it turns out to be necessary. A number of webmasters have been using this feature for quite some time now.

Submitting URLs with Fetch as Googlebot
Options like Crawl URL and Add URL are already being provided by Google which can be requested by anyone to add URLs to the index. This latest and up-to-date technique is called “Fetch as Googlebot” and is present in the Google webmaster tools. It provides an easy way for submission of updated as well as new URLs to be indexed by Google. A simple stepwise procedure is illustrated below:
- To use this feature, one has to log in to the Google account and go to the Google webmaster tools menu where it is present.
- There is present the option of “Fetch as Googlebot”. Further procedure depends upon the results of this step.
- If the fetch turns out to be successful, another option is made available known as “Submit that URL” which submits the URL to the Google index.
- After submission of the URL following the above procedure, Googlebot performs the rest of the function and the URL is crawled normally within 24 hours.
Some other handy tips in this regard are that it is not guaranteed that a URL submitted following the above procedure is surely going to be indexed. Googlebot is intentionally made quite intelligent and decides itself what to have and from where to have it. Googlebot crawl rates vary depending on the content of the page. Usually, crawl rate is set at normal and even setting it at a fast rate does not provide any surety that the site ranking will improve in the search engine page results. This feature can help out in situations where a new website is launched or some important content is updated.
